Guidelines for Creating a Simile for the Three Branches of Government
Objective: Demonstrate how the three branches of government work together to create and interpret laws. Create a simile with accompanying illustration to explain this process.
The major challenge of the assignment is to choose a Simile that you think most accurately completes the statement, “The three branches of government under the Constitution are like a…..” You may choose from the following list of ideas or you can come up with one of your own. To get an ‘A’ for this assessment you must make up your own. If you can’t come up with your own you may use one of the following examples:
· a three ring circus · a football team · a musical band · a tricycle · a three part machine
Materials: 81/2 x 14 Paper (legal size), colored pens/pencils, your own creativity
Title: on the top of your paper you must have a title written in large letters that reads, “The three branches of government under the Constitution are like a __________.”
Visual Image: Create a central image for your Simile. Your image should be bold and artistic. For each of the ten required items, create a visual illustration that represents each item. Be sure that the illustration(s) are labeled and that they fit with your Simile.
Labels: Your Simile must make direct comparisons between the three branches of government and the Simile. In doing so, you must label on your Simile project the 10 required items listed below.
Required items: Constitution, The people, Executive branch, Legislative branch, Judicial branch, President, Congress, The Supreme Court, Checks and Balances, Separation of Powers.
Each person will present their Similes to the class. During the presentation, the class will be rating each Simile for the purpose of………………………….
Writing assignment: Each individual will compose an essay that answers the following writing prompt: Describe the basic law-making process and how the constitution guides the way the government in the United States operates. (This prompt comes straight from the power standard)
